JB Smith
Building a Community Where Every Student is Known, Valued, and Supported
for sumner bonney lake school board

MY MISSION
My mission is to ensure every student in the Sumner-Bonney Lake School District is known, supported, and empowered to succeed. I am committed to fostering transparent communication, respectful collaboration, and sound decision-making that keeps our kids at the heart of every conversation. Together, with families, educators, and the community, we will continue to strengthen our schools and support the well-being and academic success of every child.
LEADERSHIP WITH A PURPOSE
For me, leadership isn’t about a title — it’s about trust, action, and purpose. I’m not a politician. I’m a mom, a neighbor, and a proud Sumner alum (’87). My husband and I have been married for 30 years and raised three daughters in this district — all Sumner High graduates (’15, ’18, ’20). As a longtime teacher and coach, my husband’s work has shown me the dedication, resilience, and heart that educators bring to their students every day. I’ve seen firsthand the impact great teachers can make, and as a current board member, I remain a strong advocate for hiring, retaining, and supporting the exceptional professionals who shape our children’s futures.
Throughout my career in healthcare and biotech, I’ve worked at the intersection of science and communication. At Genentech, I lead initiatives that promote health equity and expand access to care—principles that directly translate to advancing educational equity in our schools. My experience advocating for patients and helping people navigate complex decisions with clarity and compassion informs the way I serve on the school board: by listening carefully, communicating clearly, and always putting students first.
As a small business owner for over 20 years, I understand the importance of fiscal responsibility—making smart, strategic decisions that allow you to seize opportunities and remain resilient in challenging times. That same approach guides my work on the board. I take seriously our responsibility to be good stewards of public funds and to make decisions today that will benefit our students tomorrow. I’m committed to maintaining high levels of transparency and communication—especially regarding the use of the recent school bond—through regular updates at board meetings, timely information on the district website, and ongoing oversight by the bond oversight committee.
I believe in leading with purpose and integrity—listening first, acting transparently, and keeping students at the center of every decision. During my time on the board, I’ve worked to build bridges, not walls; to foster dialogue, not division; and to ensure that every student in our district is known, valued, and supported.
Because when we lead with heart, humility, and a steadfast commitment to our kids, real progress isn’t just possible—it’s already underway.
Strong public schools build strong communities. I’m running to keep our schools competitive, safe, and student-centered. I hope I can count on your vote!"

PRIORITIES AND GOALS
Public education is the heart of a strong community—and I’m running to continue the important work of strengthening our schools and preparing every student for success. I’m proud of the progress we’ve made during my time on the school board, and I remain deeply committed to building on that foundation.
The Sumner-Bonney Lake School District consistently outperforms most districts in Washington, but we must keep pushing forward. I’m focused on ensuring our schools remain competitive by improving test scores and advancing toward our goal of a 100% graduation rate.
I believe every student deserves a clear path to success after graduation. That’s why I strongly support a wide range of programs—from rigorous academic tracks to career and technical education—so all students are equipped with the tools they need to thrive.
Managing growth continues to be one of our district’s biggest challenges. Last year, our community made a significant investment in our future by passing two levies and a bond. I am proud to help steward that investment with transparency, accountability, and fiscal responsibility—ensuring every dollar supports student success.
Finally, I remain committed to maintaining and expanding programs that promote both the physical safety and mental well-being of our students and staff. Because when students feel safe, supported, and seen, they are empowered to reach their full potential.
Your support means everything. If you believe in experienced, transparent leadership that puts students first, please vote JB Smith for School Board—and encourage a friend to do the same!
